Discography - Cover Explanation

Break The Curse

Break the curse of sin and death is what the title of this album wants to tell us. The raven represents this sin and death. The blood of Jesus Christ, which was shed on Calvary, set us free and his death and resurrection broke the curse. Revelation 1:18 \"I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen, and have the keys of hades and of death.\"

Break The Curse
Mortification

Mortification

This cover is probably the most controversial one. Shown is Hell in all its ugliness. The object which breaks through the cloud symbolizes the lost men who forsake God\'s mercy because of their godlessness on earth. Of course, nobody knows what Hell really looks like, but the bible describes Hell as a lake of fire. Revelation 20:13-15 \"And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and hades delivered up the dead that were in them; and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire\" (King James)

Scrolls Of The Megilloth

The Megilloth is an Old Testament term meaning five scrolls. The books included are Ruth, Song of Solomon, Esther, Lamentations and Ecclesiastes. These books were read at feasts and celebrations of significant Jewish dates. When we read 2 Timothy 3:16 we realize that all scripture is there for a purpose and should all be studied to guide us. The album cover depicts the Megilloth in a cave covered in cobwebs because it is never read by some. The skeleton is symbolic of many Christians whose spiritual lives are partly dead because they haven\'t received instruction from the entire Word of God.

Post Momentary Affliction

Post Momentary Affliction

Actually the Nuclear Blast cover version does not have the originally planned Mortification Cover. The cover Mortification wanted this album to have the cover of the Intense version, drawn by Jayson Sherlock. But Nuclear Blast somehow did not like this cover and so they chose another cover of their own. Even the artist of this cover is unknown. Recently there had been a discussion about this cover whether its a prediction of the 11th september 1999. There are two ruins, in the back you can see the Mrs Liberty and two birds. But this is just a thought and nothing official, but I think it is pretty interesting.

Live Planetarium

This cover shows the idea of seeing a demon thinking you have seen an alien. Mortification doesn\'t believe in life outside this earth, so their conclusion is if someone has seen an alien or a UFO it has to be the devil who wants to deceive people by showing them confusing things. On the left side of the cover you can see the alien, the right side shows that if you take a deeper look, which is symbolized by the green polygon, you realize that it is not an alien but a demon.

Live Planetarium
Blood World

Blood World

The porthole is symbolic of God\'s view of the world. The sea of blood represents Christ\'s blood shed for us. The planets in the sea represent Christians who are born again and who have been washed clean of their sins by the blood of Christ. The earth in the background is symbolic of \'the world\', a whole planet full of people who are rejecting Christ\'s offer of salvation. The fact that the porthole is corroded symbolizes how God sees the world, full of sin and represents the stench that must fill His nostrils. Only when mankind receives Christ as his Saviour they can find salvation. The world can only be unified in love through Christ. All men are equal in His sight. We are all brothers through Him.

Primitive Rhythm Machine

The skull symbolizes Satan and all evil which he brings with him. The three swords symbolize the three crosses of Calvary. Jesus Christ suffered for you and for me on the cross in the middle and now he is the victor of hell, death and Satan. The cover shows the dominion of Jesus Christ about Satan and all evil. Genesis 3:15b \"he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.\" (King James)

The Best Of Five Years

The Best Of Five Years

This cover is a combination of the different images that were on the albums which have been released before this CD. And the fact that this was placed inside the porthole symbolises this album, a retrospection of the past five years. On the image you can see:

  • the raven and its leg which are on the Break The Curse 1990

  • a bit of the green column on Mortification

  • two of the books of Scrolls Of The Megilloth

  • the claw on the Intense version of Post Momentary Affliction

  • the human figure on the Nuclear Blast version of Post Momentary Affliction

  • the left 'demon' on the Live Planetarium album

  • the porthole on Blood World

EnVision EvAngelene

Jehovah Nissi is hebrew and means \"the Lord is my banner\". The star is a Yellow Star, in the star are three symbols: two swords which symbolizing the bible (the sword of the Spirit), the crown symbolizing that Jesus is the King of all Kings and the fish is the current symbol for us christians.

Live Without Fear

Live Without Fear

This live album shows just a band photo, so there is nothing special about it.

Noah Sat Down And Listened To Mortification While Having A Coffee

This cover is kind of special. You can see Noah here who has just taken a break from building the Ark. He completely relaxes while he enjoys his cup of coffee, and listens to the newest Mortification CD on his CD player. He is thereby surrounded by the different animals from Australia. Had you already noticed the rivets on the animals?

Triumph Of Mercy

Triumph Of Mercy

Steve Rowe had to fight against leaukaemia (which is cancer of the blood) very hard. You can read more about this in the Biography section. This album is the return of Steve Rowe, so it is his \"Triumph of Mercy\" because Steve Rowe absolutely believes that God healed him.
On the cover Steve Rowe is shown on the wing of an angel.

Hammer Of God

Another Mortification cover full of symbolic. Five swords who symbolizing the sword of the Spirit form a Yellow Star, because Jesus Christ our Lord was jewish. The both hammer in the mid of the star symbolizing the strength of God with which he destroyed the evil. The three crowns in the edges of the star symbolizing his souvereignty. The smaller swords in the edges of the star symbolizing the holy word of God which kills like a sword (Ephesians 6:17b).

Ten Years Live Not Dead

Ten Years Live Not Dead

Ten Years Live Not Dead is a live album, so the cover just shows the band in action on stage. Steve Rowe is on the left, Lincoln Bowen on the right and Keith Bannister is behind his drums in the middle.

The Silver Cord Is Severed

The name of this album is taken from the book Ecclesiastes, where in chapter 12 verse 6a says: \"Remember your Creator before the silver cord is severed and the golden bowl is broken\". With the silver cord the spine is meant and with the golden bowl the skull. With this Steve Rowe (that\'s why there is shown a bass guitar on the cover) refers to his history of sickness, and the damage in his spine as a result of the cancer. This damage had occurred because brain fluids with cancer cells had run from his head down into his spinal fluids. With this he wants to say that you never should wait too long with giving God the attention He deserves because you can never know what the future holds in store. Also it is a play on the word chord. The snares of the bass guitar that have been cut through indicate that Mortification can not exist by their own strength and that their sole goal is to glorify Christ through their music. Isaiah 53:5 \"He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed.\"

The Silver Cord Is Severed
Power, Pain & Passion

Power, Pain & Passion

This cover shows us two hands in a circle. In this circle are the words "Power, Pain and Passion", and together they form a crown of throns. The crown of throns symbolizes God, and His Passion He showed for the people when His son Jesus Christ endured the Pain for us and through His sacrifice broke the Power of sin. And thus the cover shows us people who reach out to god. Psalm 63:4 "I will bless You as long as I live, lifting my hands up to You"

Relentless

This cover is filled with symbolics. The tank stands for the power of God. And shown on the different shields around the tank there are several symbols which are mentioned in the Bible, such as the cross, the lion and the dove. And on the first shield on the side we see the chalice and bread, symbol of the sacrifice which was brought by Jesus on Calvary when He gave His life and when His blood was shed for us. The shields and the helmet refer to armour of God which is mentioned in Ephesians 6:13-17. The sword that comes from the mouth stands for the word of God that is like a double-edged sword. (Hebrews 4:12).

Brain Cleaner

Brain Cleaner

The cover of this album shows a small boy (which is Leighton Rowe, the son of Steve Rowe) who reads in the bible. The fume is symbolic for the Holy Spirit who is between God and all humans. The boy gets fulfilled with the Holy Spirit while he\'s reading in the Bible.

Psalm 119:130 \"The entrace of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.\" (King James)
